History & cultural identity

Bayrampaşa, centrally situated on the European plateaus of Istanbul between Fatih, Eyüpsultan, Zeytinburnu, Esenler, and Gaziosmanpaşa, holds a rich agricultural, military, and demographic history. During the Byzantine Empire, the region was known as Sağmalcılar, famous for its lush fertile pastures and royal vineyards. Following the Ottoman conquest, Grand Vizier Bayram Pasha constructed a private estate here in the 17th century under Sultan Murad IV, from which the district eventually derived its modern name. Following the 1923 Population Exchange and Balkan migrations in the 1950s, ethnic Turkish families from Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia settled in Sağmalcılar. Renamed Bayrampaşa in 1978 and officially incorporated as an independent municipality in 1990, the district developed into a major trade, logistics, manufacturing, and transit epicenter.
