İspir, dramatically set along the deep mountain valley of the Çoruh River in northern Erzurum bordering Rize and Artvin, holds a rich ancient Caucasian, mining, and agricultural history. Known anciently as Syspiritis (from which the region's name derived), the area was famous since antiquity for rich gold and copper mining along the Kaçkar Mountains. Inhabited by Urartians, Romans, Byzantines, Bagratid Georgians, and Seljuks before its Ottoman integration under Sultan Selim I, İspir's historic symbol is the cliffside İspir Castle (İspir Kalesi) overlooking the rushing Çoruh River.
