History & cultural identity

Sivas Merkez has served as an imperial administrative, educational, and commercial center for over two millennia. As a principal capital of the Seljuk Empire in the 13th century, the city was adorned with grand medreses and hospitals. On September 4, 1919, the Central district hosted the Sivas Congress, uniting the Anatolian national resistance under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
