Gümüşhane has been a major mining hub since antiquity, famous for its rich silver, gold, and mineral deposits along the historic Silk Road. Known in ancient times as Argyropolis (City of Silver), the region served as a strategic mountain corridor connecting the Black Sea coast to the Anatolian plateau under Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman rule. The historic settlement of Cansi, today known as Old Gümüşhane (Süleymaniye Neighborhood), reflects centuries of multicultural mining heritage where Muslim and Christian communities coexisted peacefully. During the Ottoman era, local mines supplied silver for royal minting, securing Gümüşhane a privileged economic status.
