History & cultural identity

Nevşehir sits at the undisputed historic and geographical heart of Cappadocia, a multi-layered cradle of world heritage spanning over 5,000 years. Known anciently as Nyssa and later Muşkara, the city was transformed in the 18th century by Ottoman Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa, who renamed it Nevşehir ('New City') and adorned it with grand mosques, libraries, and complexes. Historically shaped by volcanic eruptions from Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan millions of years ago, the soft tuff landscape enabled early Christian communities to construct thousands of rock-cut churches, monasteries, subterranean cities, and cave dwellings during Roman, Byzantine, and Seljuk eras. Furthermore, the province was profoundly shaped by the humanist Sufi philosophy of Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli in the 13th century.
